Deputy Lieutenants are appointed by the Lord-Lieutenant subject to the ‘non-disapproval’ of Her Majesty. The number of Deputy Lieutenants in each county is determined by the number of its inhabitants.
As Her Majesty’s representatives in the County, the first duty of a Deputy Lieutenant is to uphold the dignity of the Crown. As well as looking after visiting members of the Royal Family when visiting the County, and by acting on behalf of Her Majesty on various Military and Civil occasions, it is important that the Deputy Lieutenants support the Lord-Lieutenant in his understanding of what is going on in our own County, thanking those that make a significant contribution to the County and ensuring that wherever possible, excellence is rewarded.
A Deputy Lieutenant, it is expected to serve for at least six years before the normal retirement age of 75 years.
